Servitude, Retribution, and Enchantment

Part Fifty

Meiran took a deep breath as she walked toward the gardens where she knew both Treize and Wufei were spending their time.
Treize would be pruning his various flowers and Wufei would either be reading on the comfortable bench or meditating beneath
the small tree that was also on Treize's side of the garden.

She entered her lover's garden with ease and smiled at the beauty that always took her breath away.  Her magic kept the
temperature just perfect for whatever plant Treize wanted to grow, the soil always just right.  He still needed to water them and
prune them, but that was where he got his joy.  It calmed him to take care of these beautiful plants.

True to her prediction, Treize had a pair of pruning shears in his hand and Wufei was sitting in the lotus position underneath the
small cherry tree.  She cleared her throat and smiled at the two men that she dearly loved.  "I'm not interrupting anything, am I?"

Both men were suddenly at her side.  Wufei led her to the bench and Treize took a lap blanket to drape over her legs.  Wufei sat
beside her and met her eyes.  "You are never an interruption."  He glanced over at Treize who sat on Meiran's other side, then
continued.  "Something has been troubling you beyond the problems with your jester."

Treize nodded in agreement when Meiran looked his way.  "We've been worried, Meiran.  Are you ready to tell us what's been
on your mind?  Maybe we can help."  He took up her hands.  "Trust us, Meiran.  We want to help you.  We love you."

Meiran sighed and shook her head.  There didn't seem to be any way of getting out of what she knew she had to do.  It didn't
make it any easier though.  "I wish it were so simple."  Looking between them, she reached out and caressed Wufei's face with
one hand and Treize's with the other.  "Under normal circumstances, I'm sure what is troubling me would seem a silly thing to
worry about."  She swallowed and closed her eyes, afraid of how they'd react.  She could take almost anything except losing
them.  "I ... I am with child."

Treize's arms were immediately surrounding her, holding her close.

"I don't see how this is a bad thing."  Wufei sounded confused, which was understandable since sorcery had been frowned upon
in their village.  Being such a taboo, few spoke about it, so Wufei wouldn't know how dangerous this actually could be.

She shook her head and brought a hand to cover her eyes lightly.  "Treize, beloved ... please."  She turned to the taller man and
pressed her face to his chest.  It would kill her to explain this to her Wise Man who had endured so much already in his lifetime.
To have Wufei turn against her now, well she might as well die.

"It is impossible for Meiran to ever carry a child.  Her magic will either kill the infant before it's born, or destroy Meiran.  Either
way, the baby will not survive to draw its first breath.  It was the sacrifice she gave to wield the power of a true sorceress."
His tone was soothing and his hand gently stroked her back.  "Love, we are always so careful.  How is this possible?"

"Not always.  And nothing is failsafe.  I should have said something sooner, but-"

"Is there nothing you can do?"  Wufei's voice was full of concern, and a touch of hurt.  "If there is anything, or any way I can
help, tell me!  Please, I don't wish to see you in pain."

Meiran sighed and turned her weary gaze to Wufei.  His earnest expression tugged at her very soul.  "Dear one, I have thought
of every way possible-"  She broke off, suddenly remembering Quatre and his current condition.  "Oh, oh, there might be a
way."  She shook her head.  "I'll look into it and I promise to let the two of you know if I come up with anything."  She looked
up at Treize, who had the appearance of someone who had been forced to eat something sour and rotten.

"I wish you had said something sooner."  His shoulders slumped.  "But at least you didn't wait until it was too late."  He leaned
forward to plant a gentle kiss on her cheek.  "If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know.  I'll do anything to spare
you from feeling that pain again."

"Again?"

Meiran spun, her eyes meeting Wufei's and finding only confusion there.  She realized then what Treize had said, her heart
flipping in fear.  What would Wufei think if she were to tell the truth?  He would hate her, just as she despised herself.  The
choices she had made had aided her in her quest for revenge.  But ultimately they had left a hollow void in her soul which could
never be repaired.  She would never know the joy of a child growing and moving within her belly.  Her womb was a husk, a
tomb that could only result in death.

"Forgive me," she whispered, tears beginning to fall in a steady stream.  She held tightly to Treize's hands, fearing she would fall
apart without his support.

After a sigh, Treize responded.  "You must remember, at that time she had just lost everything.  Her village was gone.  You were
gone.  She was filled with vengeance.  When a sorcerer came along promising to help her, she leaped at the opportunity.  As
payment, he required an offering of flesh."  He looked down and swallowed.  "She went to him and gave him everything he
wanted ... a child of her body, her stolen virginity."

Meiran choked on her tears.

"I wasn't allowed to go to her until it was complete.  She was torn and bloody and the power he'd forced into her was too much
for her to take."  Treize swallowed.  "The baby was ripped from her, forced into the body of another woman ... I don't know
who.  The magic healed her physical wounds, but stripped away her sanity.  If Nataku hadn't found her, I know that she would
have been lost forever.  Nataku's presence calmed her, slowly brought her back to me.  It took me months after that to convince
her that I didn't hate her for what she had done ... just to get her to look me in the eye again."

Her eyes were squeezed shut, not wanting to see the disgust on Wufei's face.  She loved him deeply and his regard meant so
much to her.  To lose him now, she didn't know what she would do.  She gasped when a hand cupped her chin and her eyes
snapped open to meet Wufei's own dark eyes.  She wanted to look away, but his gaze held her captivated.

There was a moment of silence as Wufei's eyes searched hers and he nodded after a several long breaths.  "Better.  I much
prefer you looking me properly in the eye.  You are no weak woman to fear my judgements of you.”  He smiled, if only a little.
“We all have things in our pasts that we are ashamed of, beloved.  Now, I remember everything from my time as a slave.  Some
of my masters were magically inclined."  His thumb caressed her lips as he took a steadying breath.  "Perhaps I could be of
help.  If you are not too far along, you could transfer the baby to me?  Or is that beyond your abilities?"

A smile erupted on her face.  "That's what I wanted to check on.  I didn't want to say anything in case I couldn't do it."  She felt
her smile tugging wider and looked at her lovers in turn.  "One of these days I will tell you everything, the both of you."  With a
deep breath, she stood up and brushed off her skirts.  "Thank you, both.  I'll go see what I can do to help both myself and
Quatre."

Treize blinked in worry.  "Is he ill?"

Giving him a smile, Meiran replied.  "Only if you count pregnancy as an illness."  She kissed his cheek, then turned to kiss Wufei
as well.  "Thank you.  Thank you for being strong enough to come back to me and thank you both for being so understanding."

The love she felt for these two men lifted her heart as she turned and left the garden.  It was almost as if she could float on air,
she was so purely happy.  She had every hope that her research would be successful.  The future before her was finally bright
for a change.
